Exorcist Films

Requiem (2006)

Similar to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” this German film was inspired by the true story of Anneliese Michel, a Catholic German woman believed to have been possessed by demons and underwent exorcisms from 1975 until her death in 1976. Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid, “Requiem” incorporates the powerfully raw and gritty elements of a documentary. It centers on Michaela (Sandra Hueller), who is diagnosed with epilepsy as a child but begins to experience unsettling visions and voices during her first year in the university, leading her to believe that she is being possessed.

Constantine (2005)

Will exorcism wash away your past transgressions and take you to heaven? Well, John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) believes so. Although born an ordinary man, John possessed the gift of seeing angels and demons underneath their human disguises, a gift that becomes too heavy for him to bear that he tries to take his life. When given a second chance, John starts performing exorcisms to afflicted individuals, bringing demons back to where they belong—hell. “Constantine” marks Francis Lawrence’s directorial debut.

The Devil Inside (2012)

A certain Maria Rossi was said to have murdered three members of the clergy on Oct. 30, 1989 while she was being exorcised. This was the foundation of this William Brent Bell-directed film. Maria’s daughter Isabella seeks answers about the horrific incident 20 years later. However, she may have found more than what she's looking for.

The Rite (2011)

This film by Mikael Håfström takes off from Matt Baglio’s book “The Making of a Modern Exorcist” which, in turn, is said to have been based on real events. In “The Rite,” seminary student Michael (Colin O’Donoghue) is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican. His skepticism about the ritual gets rattled when he meets Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who opens his eyes to a phenomenon that science can't explain.

The Last Exorcism (2010)

Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) has already performed over 50 “fake” exorcisms on people thought to be possessed. Upon leaving his so-called job, Marcus agrees to have his last exorcism filmed for a documentary that is intended to expose the supposed fraudulence in his ministry. He then "helps" a farmer’s daughter who kills animals when she is possessed. Just when Marcus thought that he has cured her, succeeding events ensue that would test his faith. “The Last Exorcism” is directed by Daniel Stamm.

Future Movies

Sinister (2012)

Found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

The Possession (2012)

The Possession is the latest exorcism movie to make its way onto the big screen, and with few flaws, it certainly lived up to my eager expectations. Any horror involving young kids experiencing exorcism is disturbing, tormenting, and truly terrifying – here, The Possession is no exception.

Excision (2012)

A disturbed and delusional high school student with aspirations of a career in medicine goes to extremes to earn the approval of her controlling mother.

Islamic Exorsism

An eyewitness account of an Islamic-style exorcism carried out by an Imam in Brunei.

Live Exorcism Very Disturbing

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

When a younger girl called Emily Rose (Carpenter) dies, everyone puts blame on the exorcism which was performed on her by Father Moore (Wilkinson) prior to her death. The priest is arrested on suspicion of murder. The trail begins with lawyer Erin Bruner (Linney) representing Moore, but it is not going to be easy, as no one wants to believe what Father Moore says is true.

The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist as the number one exorcism/possession film, but it’s extremely difficult not to. The film is made of one iconic moment after another. Die hard cinephiles even make pilgrimages to, what is commonly referred to as, the “Exorcist Steps” on the campus of Georgetown University. This film is the yardstick by which all other films dealing with the devil, demons or possession must measure itself. While the other films on this list are good, some even great, they all fall short of the mark this masterpiece has kept firmly in place for nearly 40 years.
